Should we have books to download to the kindle or other e-reader? Is something else going to pop up this year that will even create more changes for libraries? Lots of questions and no answers, but exciting times for sure.

November is National Novel Writing Month and Nebraska Center for the Book is having a festival with two writing workshops on November 14th. Now is the time to write that novel that has been floating around in your mind!

Audiobooks for kids

RVLS has many audiobooks for students as well as adults. Your library can borrow them for 3 months. All the Harry Potter's are available with the wonderful narrator, Jim Dale. I listened to them in order and tried to think of places to travel so I could keep listening. There are many more audiobooks just an e-mail or phone call away. Did you know that May is "get caught reading month" . I highly recommend The Help by Kathryn Stockett which I listened to--that counts as reading! Right now I am reading one of Alexander McCall Smith's books The Miracle at Speedy Motors. His are all wonderful. Just "get caught reading" (there is even a website)

RVLS librarians met to discuss the Gates Grant opportunities on Friday, Dec. 5th. Questions still linger, such as "am I really going to get $650.00 worth of good out of this when my budget will hardly allow $650.00 in new materials--and what about the $1300.00 next year". Tough decisions in tough economic times. Sharing these thoughts and thinking in other ways made a very beneficial meeting for all involved.

E-Rate and E-Applications

RVLS will be hosting a workshop in Hastings at the Landmark Center for e-rate on Dec. 5, 2008. In the afternoon, Health and Human Services will explain e-applications and the part they hope libraries will be contributing to their clients. This workshop is free. Click here to access the flyer. This year the NLA/NEMA Convention will be held at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, NE. The dates are Oct. 16-17, with preconferences, Oct. 15. William Kloefkorn, with a grant from the Nebraska Humanities Council, will be the keynote speaker. Lunch will be provided by the prominent Hastings Chef, Oren Kariri. We think it will be a great day. Snow is still on the ground here, but the weather is nice and the wind isn't blowing. The audiobook presentation with Scott Brick was excellent. He was a great speaker. There is another new format for audiobooks called IOFY. I think it is based on the flash drive format. Something else new for libraries to think about. Do you realize that for 30 years, you listened to audiobooks on cassettes and we have gone from CD's to Playaways and now IOFY in just a few years.

Republican Valley Library System has entered the 2.0 Library world. We have a new and improved website. We hope you will find it much easier to use. A big, big thank you goes to Michael Sauers for updating the website and to the Nebraska Library Commission for allowing him to do the update. Michael pushed me way out of my comfort zone, but I am thrilled with the results.

I listened to Rise and Shine by Anna Quindlen and finished Pegasus Descending by James Lee Burke. I am also savoring The Right Attitude to Rain by Alexander McCall Smith. I just love the slow gentleness of a book by Alexander McCall Smith.
